A scent inspired by the Battle of Trafalgar - a pivotal event that cemented Great Britain's reputation as a formidable naval power in the early 19th century, but also led to the loss of one of its greatest heroes.
Fragments of oak used in the construction of Admiral Nelson's flagship, the Victory, were presented to the creative director of BeauFort London on the bicentennial of the battle in 2005, and the aroma of these historic relics and the somber stories surrounding them served as the catalyst for creating this fragrance.
In crafting Tonnerre, bold ingredients were used in exceptionally high concentrations to realize a unique, powerful scent, where the primary notes emphasize details of the Trafalgar battle story, an event deeply embedded in the British psyche.
Burning wood, gunpowder, cannon smoke, blood, and sea spray hint at the brutality and chaos of naval warfare.
A piercing citrus note was used not only as a nod to the sailors in the British fleet, who were subsequently called "Limeys" by the Americans, but also to Admiral Nelson's request for lemonade on his deathbed.
A potent dark resin note is one of the dominants, as resin was used for waterproofing ship planks and for preserving ropes.
The note of brandy, complementing the composition, is inspired by the barrel used to transport Admiral Nelson's body back to Great Britain for the hero's official burial.
Perfumer Julie Marlow was tasked with creating an uncompromisingly bold composition, yet at the same time, refined, provocative, and unique - a story in a bottle.
