My childhood memories of jasmine are intimately linked to my grandmother, who would call me at dawn to run into the garden and pick figs from the tree at our farmhouse.

I remember running towards the tree, through patches of chamomile, thistle, and dandelions. I climbed the lower branches to reach the softer, juicier figs at the top, being careful not to let the white sap from the stem touch my skin. But the most important part came next – after filling my bowl with enough fruit, I would dash to the jasmine tree and gently pluck the delicate flowers. I filled the bowl with jasmine so that the figs were almost hidden. The scent filled my nostrils, and I recall even sucking on the base of the cut flowers to taste the sweet nectar.
